Trusted Travel acknowledges the Palawa People of the Tyerrernotepanner Nation as the continuing custodians of the lands we will be visiting.

Tasmania is a state of rugged wilderness and beautiful natural surroundings; Trusted Travel are taking you on an adventure to discover the north west corner of this amazing place.

Our tour will start in Launceston, Tasmania’s northern most city with many things to see and do. From here we will make our way west and visit Cradle Mountain – a natural phenomenon not to be missed. We then head further west towards Strahan and a very historic area of Tasmania. Filled with convict history and early mining and logging towns, there is so much to see and do.

One of the highlights is The West Coast Wilderness Railway. This railway shows the ingenuity, resilience and determination that turned the west coast of Tasmania into one of the wealthiest mining regions in the world. We will climb one of the Southern Hemisphere’s steepest tracks under the unique power of the Abt Rack-and-Pinion system.

We will take a day to cruise the Gordon River and relive the history of the logging crews and convicts who helped to build this into a thriving town of the era. We will get to sample the local salmon for lunch on the cruise, plus other local delicacies. It will be a wonderful way to learn the history of the area as well as enjoying the spectacular scenery that has become a world heritage listed park.

We will be landing in Launceston and spending the afternoon exploring Launceston. This northern town has plenty of history to explore, museums, shops and restaurants. We will take the opportunity to visit the Queen Victoria Museum, located in a 19th century rail workshop and begin our trains adventure through Tasmania. We will also visit Cataract Gorge, Launceston’s little bit of wilderness in the city!

We will have dinner together in the city before a big day on the road tomorrow.

Day 2

We will wake early and have breakfast together, check out and head to Cradle Mountain. Cradle Mountain is a place of exceptional natural beauty in the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. From moss-covered ancient rainforests and deep river gorges to snow-covered mountain peaks, wild alpine moorlands and glacial lakes, the park is revered for its diverse and breath-taking landscapes.

We have the whole day to explore and enjoy this area and will be staying the night locally. An afternoon stroll through the landscape and dinner in one of the local restaurants while we watch the sun go down.

Day 3

We can have a leisurely breakfast today before we hit the road. We will wind our way through the national park and enjoy the views across the wilderness as we head towards Strahan. We are travelling across one of the most famous drives in Australia and we will be making the most of it with stops for photos along the way. There are plenty of towns along the road with local produce and delicacies for us to try. Trusted Travel love a road trip!

After a full day, we will have a relaxing afternoon and dinner together in Strahan, looking forward to a few days exploring the west coast.

Day 4

We will wake to the sounds and smells of the ocean, Strahan is an ocean village on the edge of the Great Southern Ocean. It has the quintessential village look and feel to it, established in 1880 as a mining town, it also is host to one of the harshest penal settlements in Australia’s history. There is so much Australian history in this area of Tasmania, and the railways are a major part of it.

We will be heading to the West Coast Wilderness Railway today. We will travel through the west coast’s cool temperate rainforest, and climb one of the Southern Hemisphere’s steepest tracks under the unique power of the Abt Rack and Pinion system. This system was designed in the seventeenth century and transformed the fortunes of the west coast during the late nineteenth century, and is the only operating Abt rack and pinion railway in the Southern Hemisphere. Our guide will share stories of the determined and visionary people who carved out their fortunes in one of the most difficult and remote landscapes imaginable. This train trip is one not to be missed!!

The journey takes 4 hours and takes us through some of the most beautiful and rugged wilderness in the world.

We will head back to Strahan for dinner together.

Day 5

We will have a delicious breakfast together before we set out to Queenstown. This town was central to the mining boom in the early 1900s and part of the West Coast Rail network. It was also one of the places gold was found and a boom hit the area as many people flocked to this part of Tasmania to find their bounty! This was an era of great change and improvements to the area.

We will take the day exploring and enjoying the old and new of this amazing place.

Day 6

Today finds us taking part in a river cruise that is famous all over the world. The Gordon river became famous for the Huon Pine trees found in the area. Huon Pine is one of the best materials for ship building and as such was a highly valued. The workers were “row in row out” and word quickly got out about the mesmerising reflections, dark waters and deep rainforest. The beauty had to be seen to be believed. And so, in 1896, the first leisure cruise on the Gordon River set sail. Your day cruise on the Gordon river follows the route established way back then, includes lunch and spectacular scenery with guides explaining the history all the way through the day.

We get the chance to explore the forest via an accessible walkway through and over the river. This is a highlight of the day. You will remember this trip for a long time to come!

Day 7

We will have breakfast together and discuss our plans – we have a free day today! So many things to do and see in the wild west of Tasmania and we can choose our own adventure for the day!!

Day 8

We will have our last breakfast together – what a week we have had!! We will pack up our belongings and check out after breakfast and start making our way to the airport for our return journey home. We might have some time to put in some final sight seeing before we hit the skies homeward bound! A last chance for some souvenirs and a bite to eat.
