Full Steam Ahead!
All aboard this great train weekend adventure Trusted Travel have planned for the train enthusiast and adventurer!
The Illawarra region has some fantastic opportunities to spot trains and some great organisations who preserve and work on these trains so that we can all enjoy the incredible benefits of these magnificent machines.
This weekend will be full of all sorts of trains, from model railway sets to the large full-size steam trains of old as well as a walk in the Treetops and some cricket history at the Bradman Museum in Bowral.
Our long weekend will begin on Thursday with a day spent at the Illawarra Light Rail in Albion Park. This iconic Illawarra attraction operates a mainline 2 ft narrow gauge light railway, a miniature 7 ¹⁄₄ in gauge railway, and a museum which we can explore. We will then travel to the Southern Highlands where we will be staying for the next few days.
Over the next few days we will spend time at Thirlmere – NSW Railway Museum. They have Australia’s largest collection of rolling stock steam trains, interactive activities and working steam trains for us to discover. We will also be visiting the Bradman Museum in Bowral, Roberston Heritage Railway Station and the Illawarra Fly TreeTop walk.
All you need to do is pack your bags and come along for the fun! Each participant will have access to photos taken on their holiday and we have hard cover photo books available for purchase too.

Our staff will be ready to welcome you at the departure point, farewell your families and friends and start the adventure. Our first day will be spent at The Illawarra Light Rail Museum. This is a purpose-built narrow-gauge light railway with working trains that travels through the museum picnic grounds in a bushland setting. We can wander through the onsite museum which holds a great collection of trains and memorabilia.
After we have enjoyed our time at the Light Rail Museum, we will make our towards Bowral where we will be staying, stopping somewhere nice to have lunch on the way and checking into our accommodation.
We will have dinner together tonight in one of the local restaurants.
Today we will spend the day locally in Bowral, browsing the shops and visiting ‘’All Aboard”, a model railway shop which sells all sorts of model railway paraphernalia.
We will also be visiting the Bradman Museum & International Cricket Hall of Fame which provides an exciting and interactive day out. Live footage from around the world, touch screen kiosks, fascinating memorabilia and a contemporary art gallery are just a few of the exhibits that will keep you entertained for hours. It is a fascinating look at our cricket history and that life of Sir Donald Bradman.
We will have dinner together and a relaxing evening in preparation for our big day out tomorrow.
Today we will have a big breakfast in our accommodation and head out to Thirlmere Rail Museum.
There are many trains to investigate and explore, interactive displays and exhibitions to enjoy at Thirlmere. It houses the 3801 – a famous locomotive that has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is often in steam and providing train journeys from Thirlmere to Buxton. We will able to ride on one of the glorious steam trains while visiting the NSW Rail Museum. There is so much to see and do at the Railway Museum and we have the day to take it all in.
The area was hit hard by the December fires and we can support the community by buying lunch in one of the local restaurants. We will also be visiting The Candy Train Lolly shop and a few of the other local businesses to support the Empty Esky program while we are here.
We will travel back to Bowral and have dinner together.
After another delicious breakfast together, we will be driving to Robertson. There is plenty to see and do in Robertson. The Sunday Markets will be open with local wares and produce, the pie shop is always worth a visit. There is also the heritage listed Robertson Railway Station, a living gallery and homage to travelling by rail. There is a gallery and small exhibition space to explore as well as the well-maintained gardens that feature amazing displays of flowers throughout the year. On Sunday afternoons, some of the local model train enthusiasts meet here to make and update their model train layouts and we will be visiting and spending some time observing and playing with the trains and chatting with the locals.
After a lovely day we will head back to Bowral for our last dinner together.
Today we will have breakfast together, gather our things and checkout. We will hop on board our bus and drive the scenic route to the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk. The Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk is an awe-inspiring way to experience the Illawarra escarpment with a walk through the beautiful rainforest.
Unique to the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk is the 500 metre steel walk in the treetop canopy, some 20-30 metres above the ground. The walk culminates in a spiral tower, rising to 45 metres above the forest floor, which opens to breathtaking views from the escarpment over the Illawarra, superbly uniting the mountains, farming land, bushland and the sea. We can do as little or as much of the walk as we like!! It’s a great view from the top!
We will really need some lunch after that walk through the tree tops and we can stop somewhere nice on the way back to Wollongong. After lunch, we will be ready to meet up with our family and friends and say goodbye to the new friends we have made on this trip.
Thanks to Robertson Heritage Railway Station for the use of their photos.
