Trusted Travel are taking you away for a weekend full of steam engines, classic cars and fun times with a great group of like-minded people.
Australia has a rich history of engineering, machinery and all things steam and the Hunter Valley Steamfest is a celebration of this. Steamfest was established in 1986 following the closure of the last coal operated steam hauled freight service in Australia on the South Maitland Railway Line in 1983, Steamfest pays homage to the end of an industrial era and the men and women involved in its operation.
We will be driving up to Maitland and taking in the sights on the way, stopping for some lunch and to stretch our legs. We will have a get-to-know-you dinner on the first night together in our house in the Hunter Region. We have two days to explore Steamfest and all it has to offer, plenty of steam trains and engines, a classic car show, food stalls, live entertainment and heaps of other activities, the highlight of the Festival is the Steam train race. We will be a part of that!
We will also be taking the time to take in some more of Australia’s heritage with a visit to Maitland Gaol, which has a fascinating story and remains in its architectural glory – just like it was when it was operating as a gaol to some hardened criminals.
All Aboard for a weekend full of steam, history and adventure.

We will jump on the bus and head north through Sydney, with a few stops on the way to refuel for lunch and stretch our legs and will be in the area for an afternoon stroll through the shops to buy supplies to cook our “get to know you” dinner together.
Today we will have breakfast together at our accommodation and get ready for our first day at the festival. Steamfest features a diverse program of entertainment including historic steam train trips, vintage machinery displays and demonstrations, live music, interactive heritage walks, a vintage car display, market stalls, food stalls, steampunkers, and more.
We will have lunch at one of the many food stalls or cafes around town.
The heart and soul of Steamfest is its impressive assembly of steam trains and we have tickets on one of the fabulous trains this afternoon. We will be boarding at 3pm and heading out to the Port Waratah Coal loop, an historic and scenic rail journey around the area.
We will head back to the accommodation in the afternoon for some down time before a relaxing dinner together and some after dinner games.
We will be up and out early for breakfast this morning as we have tickets on board the R766 for the ARTC Great Train Race– this is the race of 4 steam trains against a tiger moth plane flying above us!!! Let’s hope we are on the winning train!
After the excitement of the race, we will spend the rest of the day wandering and enjoying the many attractions on offer.
The annual Show’n’Shine is on today – this is a car show like no other with over 500 classic cars to marvel and drool over this will be first on our list. The rest of day will be filled with rock’n’roll, tractors and big engines from the past, food stalls and a whole truckload of fun.
We will head back to our house for a final dinner together, full of stories and memories of a great Steamfest together.
This morning we will take our time with a hearty breakfast together. We will be packing and checking out today for our trip home, but not without a stop at the famous Maitland Gaol. One of the oldest gaols in Australia. With 150 years of history the site saw discipline including whippings of convicts right up to the lighter treatment of the white collar criminals in the later years. As you walk around the gaol there is a strong notion of history, you can see the pain and struggle to survive, the frustration and determination is all evident within the walls. It is an interesting piece of history that’s for sure.
We will have lunch together and make our way back to family and friends after a great weekend together.
All participants can treasure their holiday memories forever with the purchase of a hard cover keepsake photo book
